Our estates BONGRAN, Roally
Thevenet Quintaine
Estates at the heart of Viré-Clessé and the Mâconnais
The working philosophy of the estates perpetuates a family know-how rooted in the expression of terroir, the pursuit of perfect ripeness, and vineyard management that respects nature.
The objective: to produce precise and authentic Viré-Clessé white wines that reflect a generous terroir, while respecting nature and all living things.
An objective upheld at every stage: choice of grape variety, soil maintenance through ploughing, manual harvesting when the grapes are very ripe-when possible at the stage of blettissement for certain cuvées, meaning the onset of noble rot-slow pressing of the grapes before transfer to vats, and slow fermentations.
Domaine de la Bongran
A history carved in stone and vine
The Domaine de la Bongran is a family-run wine estate passed down from generation to generation, originally known under the name Gillet.
The name Thevenet first appeared in 1904 with Philémon, followed by his son Émile, who further developed the estate. Jean Thevenet officially succeeded him in 1972, before handing over the domaine to his son Gautier in 2000. This terroir is characterised by Oxfordian white marls and Upper and Middle Bathonian limestone, once prized by stonecutters for centuries.
The distinctive white marls of Quintaine produce deep, elegant white wines with great ageing potential. The Bongran style is built on the perfect ripeness of Chardonnay, resulting in cuvées of remarkable aromatic richness. From La Cuvée E. J. Thevenet to La Cuvée Emilian Gillet, the full spectrum of Viré-Clessé finds a rich expression here, a faithful reflection of their terroir.
Domaine de Roally
A balanced terroir, a continuous history
Gautier took over the Domaine de Roally from Henri Goyard in 2002.
The estate’s vineyards also thrive in an outstanding location overlooking the Saône plain from the hamlet of Quintaine, on mid-slope hillsides with an east / south-east exposure.
The clay-loam and loamy-sandy soil structures, resting on limestone and marl subsoils, provide moisture and exceptional freshness to this terroir.
The pale gold hue of the Viré-Clessé from Domaine de Roally reveals a fine balance between freshness and aromatic richness. Its discreet minerality and elegant length embody the charm of the whites of the Mâconnais.
Today, Gautier carries on the family know-how by cultivating the vines and vinifying the cuvées of the estates in accordance with winemaking traditions and respect for the terroir.
This approach allows each wine to fully express the identity and uniqueness of its terroir, revealing complementary expressions of Viré-Clessé Chardonnay. Their identity, shaped by respect for all living things and an organic approach, is rooted in a family continuity in which each generation has enriched this heritage.
This history is essential to understanding the singularity of these wines; it forms the very foundation of the estates’ identity.
